Vietnam proposes ‘Two Countries, One Destination’ initiative to Thai PM

Vietnam’s leading hospitality and tourism group, Sun Group, has proposed a series of strategic cooperation initiatives aimed at deepening tourism, trade, and investment ties between Vietnam and Thailand.

The proposals were presented during a meeting on June 9 between representatives of Vietnam’s tourism sector and Thailand’s Prime Minister, as part of the official visit marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During the discussion, Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of Sun Group, outlined the group’s diversified ecosystem spanning hospitality, entertainment, real estate, infrastructure, healthcare, education, aviation, and finance. Building on these sectors, he proposed several areas for bilateral collaboration designed to strengthen regional tourism connectivity.

Among the key initiatives was the concept of a “Two Countries, One Destination” tourism model, linking some of the most recognised leisure destinations in Vietnam and Thailand, including Phu Quoc, Phuket, and Koh Samui.

According to Truong, the initiative could be supported by expanded air connectivity through Sun PhuQuoc Airways, which plans to develop routes linking Phu Quoc, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City with destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.

By combining enhanced flight networks with Phu Quoc’s visa-free entry policy, the proposal aims to create seamless multi-destination journeys for international travellers, particularly those from Europe and CIS markets, while also encouraging greater travel exchange between Vietnamese and Thai visitors.

Sun Group also expressed its hope for closer aviation cooperation, including support for slot allocations at major Thai airports and joint destination marketing efforts that position Vietnam and Thailand as complementary tourism experiences within Southeast Asia.

The proposal comes as Phu Quoc continues to strengthen its position as one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing tourism destinations. The island welcomed 1.17 million international visitors during the first five months of 2026, representing a 51 percent increase year-on-year and achieving more than half of its annual target.Vietnam’s leading hospitality and tourism group, Sun Group, has proposed a series of strategic cooperation initiatives aimed at deepening tourism, trade, and investment ties between Vietnam and Thailand.
