Old Vietnamese Steam Locomotives Back on Rails

The Revolution Express, a steam-powered tourist train, is set to start operating between Da Nang and Hue in late 2024 or early 2025. This exciting project is a collaboration between Indochina Rail Tourist Service and Wafaifo Optimisers. Retaining the charm of Vietnam’s 1960s steam locomotives, the train promises a unique travel experience through Central Vietnam’s heritage region.

The Revolution Express will run daily round trips between Da Nang and Hue, passing through the stunning Hai Van Pass. This route, known for its breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery, is a must-see for any traveler in Central Vietnam. The train will also stop at Lang Co, famous for its beautiful lagoon and beach.

Two original steam locomotives from the 1960s have been meticulously restored to their former glory. These locomotives will pull retro-style carriages, each seating up to 57 passengers, along with a bespoke kitchen and baggage car. These are the last working pre-independence steam engines in Vietnam which were built to the French Mikado design. Their restoration has been a labor of love, using original parts and the expertise of the last remaining steam engineers from Vietnam Railways.

A Journey Through History and Thrilling Scenic Route

The Revolution Express will take passengers on a historical journey across Central Vietnam, exploring the beaches of Da Nang and the ancient tombs and palaces of Hue, the former imperial capital. “The trains are almost ready, with the first trips expected in late 2024 or early 2025,” Wafaifo Optimisers stated.

Besides the train, running from Da Nang to Hue, promises to provide visitors with a captivating journey through Central Vietnam’s coastal mountains and heritage sites. Including Hai Van Pass, a route known for its meandering roads, lush vegetation, and stunning ocean views. This scenic drive was listed as one of the “Top 10 Most Thrilling Scenic Drives in Asia” by The Travel in 2022. Any true traveler to Central Vietnam will fall in love with this picturesque railway along the pass.

Tickets are not yet on sale, but booking information will be available soon. Michael Gebbie, Chairman of Indochina Rail Tourist Service, expressed pride in bringing these historic trains back to life, offering visitors an interactive sense of Vietnam’s rich history and future.

Unparalleled On-Board Services

The Revolution Express will offer a new riding experience, combining vibrant natural scenery with modern amenities and exceptional food and beverage service. Passengers, surrounded by old-world splendor and served by staff in period costumes, can enjoy light food and drinks while taking in some of Southeast Asia’s most picturesque coastlines and mountain passes.

Travelers can experience themed meals at three stops along the journey: Kim Lien in Da Nang, Lang Co Beach, and the Hue Imperial Citadel. In Hue, the old train maintenance depot has been transformed into the Station Restaurant, featuring an imperial theme. In Lang Co, the on-board restaurant will offer homemade ice cream, freshly squeezed fruit juices, Vietnamese coffee, and freshly pressed sugar cane juice. Another restaurant with a colonial theme is planned for the station on the outskirts of Da Nang.

When the Revolution Express arrives at each station, passengers will be greeted by a brass band in full military regalia and promises to provide visitors with an interesting journey along the coastal mountains adjacent to the Hai Van Pass in central Vietnam.
