Ho Chi Minh City races to break ground for Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem metro link

The municipal People’s Committee has outlined a plan for a 6.2-kilometer metro segment linking Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, emphasizing urgency and prioritization of resources. Key tasks are assigned to streamline procedures and enhance coordination. Construction on the Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem section is set to finish before April 20.

The municipal People’s Committee has issued an implementation plan for the 6.2-kilometer metro segment, including a detailed appendix that assigns responsibilities, duties, and deadlines.

The plan secures conditions for starting the Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem section while accelerating investment in the second metro line overall. Upon completion, it will create a strategic corridor linking Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province.

Key tasks and priority items guide focused efforts, supported by coordinated organizational measures for effective execution.

The administration stresses treating the project as a major political mission, demanding concentrated time, expertise, personnel, and resources. It calls for mobilizing the municipal political system and maximizing coordination among entities.

Departments must resolve procedural issues promptly, eliminate bottlenecks, and uphold strict quality standards. Instructions emphasize information technology to speed document processing, preventing delays and meeting groundbreaking timelines.

Dai Quang Minh Real Estate Investment Corporation (under Truong Hai Group, or THACO) is preparing a feasibility report for the Ben Thanh – Thu Thiem section.

Units are working around the clock to launch before April 20. The city deems it a key, urgent infrastructure project requiring immediate action.

Beyond HCMC’s daily travel needs, the section forms part of a future urban rail corridor between the two airports.

In mid-January, construction began on a second metro line stretch from Ben Thanh to Tham Luong in the northwest. The city’s first line, Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien, started commercial operations in December 2024.
