The Olympic Sports City project in Hanoi, initiated in December 2025, has commenced construction with a groundbreaking ceremony held in February 2026. Spanning over 9,171 hectares, it includes the Dong Son Stadium, designed for 135,000 spectators. The project aims to fortify Vietnam’s position in global sports and culture, with completion slated for 2035.
Since early February 2026, the Olympic Sports City project in Thuong Phuc Commune, Hanoi, has begun to show visible construction activity on site. Contractors have mobilized specialized machinery and started building access roads to support the development of key components, including the landmark Dong Son Stadium. By the end of February, the project officially held its groundbreaking ceremony and continues to progress according to the planned timeline.

The Olympic Sports City was originally launched on December 19, 2025. According to the developer, Vingroup, the project spans more than 9,171 hectares with a total estimated investment of approximately VND 925 trillion. Once completed, it will become the largest urban development in Vietnam, extending across 11 communes in southern Hanoi. The master plan divides the project into four functional zones, designed to form an integrated urban ecosystem combining sports, services, and commercial activities aligned with international standards. At its core is a continental-scale sports complex expected to elevate Hanoi’s position on the regional sports and cultural map while generating long-term economic momentum.
The centerpiece of this complex is the Dong Son Stadium, a national-level project covering 73.3 hectares. Designed to accommodate 135,000 spectators, the stadium will meet FIFA standards and is projected to become the largest stadium in the world. With this capacity, it would surpass North Korea’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium (114,000 seats), currently the largest stadium globally, as well as Morocco’s Hassan II Stadium (115,000 seats), which is under construction for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Architecturally, the stadium draws inspiration from the Dong Son bronze drum, an iconic symbol of ancient Vietnamese civilization. Integrating this cultural motif into a global-scale sports venue reflects an ambition to create a new national symbol in the era of international integration.
From a technical perspective, the project will incorporate advanced technologies, including a large-scale retractable roof system, alongside energy-efficient solutions and environmentally friendly materials to meet international sporting standards.
According to current plans, Dong Son Stadium is expected to be completed by 2028. Supporting infrastructure, urban developments, and auxiliary facilities within the Olympic Sports City are targeted for completion by 2035. With this scale of investment, the project is seen as laying the foundation for Vietnam to pursue the hosting of major global sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup, the Olympic Games, or continental tournaments in the future.
