Thai paper names Vietnam island among top Southeast Asia travel destinations for 2026

Phu Quy Island, recognized by Khaosod as one of Southeast Asia’s top 10 must-visit destinations for 2026, boasts pristine landscapes and volcanic terrain. Less crowded than popular spots like Phu Quoc, it offers an authentic experience with modest accommodations. The island is ideal for exploration from December to June, featuring clear seas and a charming climate.

Phu Quy Island, off Vietnam’s south-central coast, has been named one of Southeast Asia’s top 10 must-visit destinations for 2026 by Thai newspaper Khaosod, which praised the island for its pristine landscapes and “cinematic beauty.”

In its January 5 feature spotlighting lesser-known travel destinations, Khaosod described Phu Quy as one of ASEAN’s remaining “quiet corners” – places that are still raw, lightly visited, and rewarding for travellers seeking authenticity over crowds. “Bangkok is back, Bali is bursting, and Vietnam is viral,” the paper wrote. “As we enter 2026, the real question is: where can you go to actually hear yourself think?”

While many travellers flock to popular islands such as Phu Quoc, Khaosod noted that seasoned explorers are instead boarding ferries from Phan Thiet to Phu Quy. The island’s rugged volcanic terrain, emerald waters and absence of mass tourism offer a glimpse of Vietnam’s coastline as it was decades ago.

Accommodation on Phu Quy remains modest, with guesthouses and homestays dominating the landscape, as large resorts are largely absent. Shaped by ancient volcanic activity, the island is surrounded by clear seas and retains a distinctly untamed character.

Also known as Cu Lao Thu, Phu Quy lies around 120 kilometres southeast of Phan Thiet and spans approximately 18 square kilometres. Beyond the main island, the area includes smaller islets such as Hon Tranh, Hon Do, Hon Da Cao and Hon Hai, adding to its appeal for exploration.

Phu Quy enjoys a cool, fresh climate throughout the year. The ideal time to visit is from December to June, when seas are calm and visibility is high. The storm season typically runs from September to November. During spring and summer, gentle winds and clear waters make it easy to access nearby islets and enjoy marine activities.

Alongside Phu Quy, Khaosod’s 2026 list also features other lesser-known destinations across Southeast Asia, including Ulu Temburong in Brunei, Nong Khiaw in Laos, Romblon in the Philippines, Doi Mae Salong in Thailand, Koh Tonsay in Cambodia, Bukit Lawang and Sumba Island in Indonesia, Ipoh in Malaysia, and Myanmar’s Mergui Archipelago.
